This is my long-time friend Mark Mellinger of Columbus, Miss.
Mark was in his second successful year of turkey hunting (2004)
and using a push button call. I sent him a long box and a
week later he sent me back this picture of a nice eastern
tom.
Story:
Mark set up for a fly-down hunt in a hay field near by to
the woods where birds were roosted. He set up with his back
to one of those big hay bales, set out a hen decoy, and listened
to the birds gobbling on the roost. At the (apparently) right
time Mark made one series of yelps with the box and set it
down. Ten minutes later the longbeard was flopping and Mark's
season was over.
I was very happy that Mark was able connect with one of my
calls on a hard-hunted southern bird.
