April '05 limbhanger longbeard from Northern Idaho.
Story:
This was a big boy of the area. A 9 1/2 inch beard and honest
1 1/8 inch spurs on both sides. Long, curved and pointy. A definite
limbhanger.
I set up in the wrong place for the fly down and he had a different
place he wanted to be with the hens and jakes. He wouldn't come
to me but answered my calls. I can take a hint so I went away
for about two hours and came back. He answered the yelps from
my long box. I closed the distance by about a hundred yards
and before I could get sat down he walked in. Bang.
Notice his neck? I laid him in the shade while I scouted elsewhere
for a couple of hours. When I came back the ravens and magpies
had discovered his concealed carcass. Apparently they hunt by
smell as well as sight. They pecked most of the meat off his
neck and helped themselves to his viscera. So now I know what
not to do next year.
